Therapy and Coaching For Individuals & Couples

Frequently Asked Questions

 Questions

What Is The Difference Between Therapy & Coaching?

The difference between therapy & coaching is that therapy is medical treatment & Coaching is a self-improvement process aimed towards a specific result (in this case, a more Empowered relationship with yourself and/or others).

Even though I maintain my License as A Marriage Therapist, and still offer therapy sessions to clients in Utah, most of what I do is coaching for individuals and couples. My areas of specialty include helping clients become more secure with themselves and others, religious/faith transitions, and mixed-faith (or secular/religious) marriages.

Advanced Relationship Development includes a deep exploration of yourself and your relationships. While doing this work can be very transformative and supportive, it can also exacerbate certain conditions...such as active addictions, domestic violence, self-harm, and certain types of mental illness. In some cases Coaching can be done alongside therapy and/or medical treatment. If you would like an assessment of your specific situation please schedule a free consultation, and we will discuss whether this approach is a good fit for you at this time.

Is Online Coaching Effective?

After 15-years of doing therapy & coaching both in-person and online, I have found online work to be as effective, if not more so, than in-person work.

In fact, I moved to fully remote, online, coaching and therapy the year before COVID because I found that I preferred it...both as a practitioner, and as a client (I prefer to see my own coaches & mentors online).

Here are the reasons I prefer Online Coaching

1) You can work with me...no matter where you live.
2) It's easier to dive right into the work.
3) It is convenient. You do not need to travel, or pay the resources to travel to see me.
4) Online coaching requires you to create a "safe" space for doing personal/relational work in your own home environment. This is helpful for your growth.

If you have any questions, or need some ideas for how to create a private, safe, space in your own environment, schedule a free consult to discuss this.

Do You Only Offer "Relationship" Work?

No. I work with both individuals and couples on a variety of issues & goals. One of my areas of speciality is helping clients who are navigating religious changes and/or mixed-faith couples. I also help clients with personal issues, career issues, how to navigate big changes, transformation coaching, relationship issues, leadership issues, etc.

While I help clients with a variety of issues, I do use a Relationship-oriented lens. What that means is that my focus will be on helping you Advance your relationship first and foremost to yourself, and then we will explore how you relate to your career, your partner, your spirituality, your emotions, your finances, your health, your children, etc. (whatever you want to work on).

What If I Want To Do Relationship/Marriage Coaching & My Partner Doesn't Want To Join Me?

While it is ideal if both people want to start the process together, the reality is that nearly 50% of the time even the process of Relationship work starts with Individual Coaching. Often one person is ready to begin learning before the other.

If you're partner is not ready to do Relationship/Marriage coaching with you, I would suggest starting with Individual coaching, where you can begin to explore your relationship to yourself and how you experience & perceive your partnership.

If your partner decides they want to join at any time during the therapy or coaching process, we will discuss ways to transition into couple's work.

If you are single, and don't have a partner, individual coaching will focus on the areas of your personal & relationship life that you want to improve. We can discuss dating and partnership as it fits in with your current situation, desire, and values.

Do You Offer In-Person Coaching?

I do all of my sessions with clients online (via Zoom).  There are two situations under which I offer in-person work.  One is if you want to do an Intensive Coaching day.  The other is through the Live Events I offer periodically. (*see Coaching/Courses in the navigation bar to learn more about Coaching Intensives & Live Events).
